«WHAT URBAN FUTURES? FROM CRISIS TO HOPE»
Já se encontra aberto o período de inscrições para participar na Conferência Anual do ICS-ULisboa que, na edição de 2019, debaterá entre 03 e 06 de junho, no Auditório Sedas Nunes (ICS) o tema «What urban futures? From crisis to hope», com a participação do Ministro da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, Manuel Heitor.
Há algumas décadas atrás, a ascensão da globalização parecia sugerir que a entidade socioespacial a que chamamos de "cidade" seria progressivamente substituída por redes desterritoralizadas. No entanto, hoje é-nos dito que estamos a viver numa "era urbana". O debate em torno do significado exato desse retorno ao "urbano" é um linha importante no campo dos estudos urbanos. Embora as instituições internacionais, lideradas pelo programa UN-Habitat, defendam uma conceção do urbano como um lugar que atrai uma parcela crescente de pessoas das zonas rurais, as ciências sociais críticas concentraram-se no urbano como uma categoria processual e relacional: isto é, na urbanização e na sua atual escala planetária. Não obstante as diferentes perspetivas, a maioria concorda que os processos de urbanização merecem maior atenção em termos dos seus riscos e potencialidades.

«WHAT URBAN FUTURES? FROM CRISIS TO HOPE»
The registration period to participate in the ICS-ULisboa Annual Conference is now open. In the 2019 edition, it will be discussed the theme "What future urban? From crisis to hope ", with the participation of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, amongst other relevant speakers.
A few decades ago, the rise of globalisation seemed to suggest that the socio-spatial entity that we call the ‘city’ was to be progressively replaced by de-territorialised networks. Yet, today we are told that we are living in an ‘urban age’. The debate around the exact meaning of this return to the ‘urban’ is an important thread in the field of urban studies. While international institutions led by UN-Habitat favour a conception of the urban as a place attracting an increasing share of people from rural areas, critical social sciences have instead focused on the urban as a processual and relational category: that is, on urbanisation, and on its current planetary scale. Notwithstanding the different perspectives, most agree that the processes of urbanisation deserve increased attention in terms of their risks and potentialities.
