Tacitus is a widely known author but perhaps not studied as much as he deserves. Despite the general interest shown these last decades, there is still much to explore in his work. In order to foster further investigation of Tacitus, and explore themes and issues that have not yet been fully investigated, the Centre for Classical Studies (CEC) and the Centre for History (CH-ULisboa) of the University of Lisbon are organizing an International Conference, which will take place between 26th and the 28th of November 2024.

Speakers are encouraged to employ philological, historical, political and anthropological approaches in their presentations, which may investigate any of the following topics:

1. Characters in Tacitus;
2. Political, religious, and anthropological perspectives in Tacitus’ works;
3. Reception of Tacitus’ works from Antiquity to the present day;
4. Tacitus and his contemporaries;
5. Tacitus and his contemporary Rome;
6. Tacitus and Historiography;
7. Tacitus and Political Thought;
8. Tacitus in Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance periods;
9. Tacitus: style and language
10. Tacitus’ Sources
11. Warfare in the works of Tacitus
12. Women in Tacitus

All those who are interested in giving a paper are warmly invited to submit a proposal by May 15, 2024. Submissions should contain the title of the presentation, an abstract of no more than 500 words, as well as the author’s name, affiliation(s), email, and a short biographical note, and main publications (100 words). Proposals should be sent to: tacitus@letras.ulisboa.pt
