ARQUIVO DE HISTÓRIA SOCIAL » UMA IMAGEM

Em 1911 um fotógrafo do Estúdio Silva Magalhães, em Tomar, visita uma fábrica de fiação e cria esta imagem. As raparigas, descalças, posam estáticas olhando para a câmara. Nesse ano, um censo de nível nacional revela que as mulheres e as crianças são ainda a principal força de trabalho da mais forte indústria portuguesa, os têxteis. As mulheres ganhavam menos do que os homens e as crianças ganhavam menos do que as mulheres. Ambas constituíam a mão-de-obra barata e não qualificada que sustentava o tecido industrial português.

In 1911 a photographer from the Silva Magalhães Studio, based in Tomar, goes inside a spinning factory in his city and creates this image. The barefoot girls stand still and look at the camera. In the same year, the national census revealed how women and children were still the main workforce of the Portuguese strongest industry, textiles. Women earned less than men, and children earned less than women, both represented the cheap unskilled labour sustaining the major part of Portuguese industry.
