[Call for Sessions and Papers] VII International Conference on the Middle Ages: Construction and Reconstruction in Medieval Urban Europe

As cidades medievais demarcavam-se na paisagem por serem grandes concentrações humanas, mas também pela mancha do seu edificado. As construções serviam diversas funções: militares, religiosas, político-administrativas, económicas e residenciais. Nem todas as urbes tinham os mesmos edifícios. Além disso, de localidade para localidade e de rua para rua, as características das construções podiam oscilar, devido vários elementos, como os recursos financeiros e materiais disponíveis, a mão-de-obra empregue, os conhecimentos técnicos utilizados, o período de construção ou os interesses do responsável pela obra. Em momentos conturbados, como as guerras e revoltas edifícios urbanos podiam ser destruídos, exigindo obras de reconstrução e/ou aperfeiçoamento, nem sempre fáceis de custear.

Assim, e num tempo de reconstrução como o atual, o Instituto de Estudos Medievais da NOVA-FCSH e a Câmara Municipal de Castelo de Vide organizam nos próximos dias 6-8 de outubro de 2022 as VII Jornadas Internacionais de Idade Média, este ano subordinadas ao tema: Construção e reconstrução na Europa urbana medieval. Tendo como espaço de observação a Europa cristã e islâmica, pretende-se que esta temática seja abordada grosso modo através de perspetivas distintas, mas complementares. Convidam-se, assim, os investigadores de qualquer área científica (História, a Arqueologia, a História da Arte, a Literatura, o Direito, entre outras), que se interessem pelo tema no período medieval a apresentarem propostas de sessões e/ou de comunicação no âmbito dos seguintes painéis temáticos:

A construção corrente
Habitação de prestígio
Edifícios militares
Edifícios religiosos
Edifícios de abastecimento e equipamentos urbanos
Financiamento da construção e reconstrução
Técnicas construtivas
Abastecimento de matérias-primas de construção
Reaproveitamento de materiais de construção
Regulamentação da construção
Os rostos da construção: assalariados, mesteres e outros
Destruição e Reconstrução em períodos de “crise”
Arqueologia da Arquitetura
A construção e reconstrução no espaço urbano: representações na literatura e na arte
A construção e reconstrução em Castelo de Vide durante a Idade Média
A estrutura do encontro contará com 4 conferências plenárias realizadas por especialistas convidados pela organização e com sessões temáticas. Cada uma dessas sessões será constituída por três comunicações e terá a duração de 60 minutos. Os investigadores interessados poderão propor assim sessões e/ou comunicações individuais.

As Jornadas contam também como um programa sociocultural que inclui um jantar e visitas guiadas a locais a determinar, decorrendo uma delas após o programa científico. Durante o encontro será ainda feita a apresentação pública do livro que reúne uma seleção dos textos expostos nas VI Jornadas Internacionais de Idade Média de Castelo de Vide e na Escola de Outono, realizadas em outubro de 2021.

As línguas do encontro são o português, o espanhol, o francês e o inglês.

Cities were conspicuous in the Medieval landscape not only for being great concentrations of humanity, but also for their built-up areas. Buildings served various functions: military, religious, political-administrative, economic, and residential. Further, not all cities had the same buildings whilst, from neighbourhood to neighbourhood and from street to street, building characteristics could differ according to an assortment of factors including the financial and material resources available, the type of labour-force employed in the building, the technical know-how applied, the length of the construction period, and the interests of those commissioning the work.

In moments of convulsion such as wars and rebellions, urban buildings could be destroyed requiring works of rebuilding and/or renovation that were not always easily affordable. In these present times of reconstruction, the Institute of Medieval Studies of NOVA-FCSH and the Municipality of Castelo de Vide have come together to organize the VII International Conference of the Middle Ages which will be held from 6th to 8th October 2022 under the theme: Construction and Reconstruction in Medieval Urban Europe.

A principal focus will be on Christian and Islamic Medieval Europe, embracing varied angles of approach. Researchers from any scientific discipline (including, History, Archaeology, Art History, Literature, Law, etc) with an interest in the foregoing, are invited to submit proposals for panels and/or individual papers within the following thematic groupings:

Current construction
Prestigious housing
Military buildings
Religious buildings
Buildings serving urban utilities and facilities/infrastructure
Financing construction and reconstruction
Construction techniques
Supply of construction raw materials
Reuse of construction materials
Construction regulations
The faces of construction: salaried workers, masters and others
Destruction and Reconstruction in “crisis” periods
Archeology of Architecture
Construction and reconstruction in urban space: representations in literature and art
The construction and reconstruction of Castelo de Vide during the Middle Ages
The Conference will comprise 4 plenary sessions featuring researchers invited by the organizing committee, along with separate thematic panels. Each panel will be made up of three paper presentations and will be 60 minutes long. Researchers wishing to participate are requested to submit proposals for whole panels and/or individual papers, the latter being arranged by the organizing committee into coherent panels. The Conference includes a full cultural program with guided tours, Conference Dinner, and a public Book Launch to present the published volume which brings together a selection of articles gathered from the VI International Conference of the Middle Ages and the Autumn School of October 2021.
