Começamos a nossa viagem pelos vestígios da diáspora sefardita em Nova Iorque no local onde, a 8 de Abril de 1730, foi consagrada a primeira sinagoga erigida na América do Norte. Situada em Mill Street (actualmente, 26 South William Street, no centro financeiro), tornou-se no templo de uma congregação formada em 1654 e que, até então, celebrava os seus serviços litúrgicos em sinagogas improvisadas. No início do século XIX, a sinagoga de Mill Street já se tinha tornado demasiado pequena para conseguir agregar uma comunidade em crescimento. Assim, uma segunda sinagoga foi construída no mesmo lugar em 1818, mas a sua vida foi curta. Como a maior parte da comunidade residia então na zona da cidade hoje conhecida como Greenwich Village, a congregação decidiu mudar o seu templo para a Crosby Street em 1834. Das duas primeiras sinagogas de Nova Iorque, hoje nada resta.

Our journey through the traces of the Sephardic diaspora in New York starts in the place where the first synagogue in continental North America was consecrated on April 8, 1730. Located on Mill Street (today, 26 South William Street, in the Financial District), it became the temple of the Jewish congregation of New York. The congregation was formed in 1654, but, for decades, its religious services were held in improvised synagogues. In the early 19th century, the Mill Street synagogue was too small to aggregate an ever-growing community. So, a second synagogue was built in the same place in 1818, but its life was short. As most of the community was then living in Greenwich Village, the congregation decided to move its temple to Crosby Street in 1834. At present, nothing remains of the first two synagogues of New York.
