On October 22, 2019, Stuart Price (De Montfort University) will give a lecture titled “Authority, Authoritarianism, and Public Dissent: Spain 2011-2019”, at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Coimbra, Sala Ferreira Lima, 2h30pm (14h30). This event is organized by the PhD Programme in Materialities of Literature and the Centre for Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra.

Abstract

This illustrated lecture examines the development of public protest and dissent within the ‘arrested democracy’ of Spain, and covers a range of movements, including the Indignados, Catalonia’s Independenistas and the CDR, the libertarian movement, the Ladders Revolution, and the Huelga General Feminista of 2018/19. The central question is not only the character of Spanish democracy, but the nature of the contemporary state as it governs through forms of disciplinary austerity (Lorey, 2015; Tansel, 2017).

Stuart Price is Professor of Media and Political Discourse and the Director of the Media Discourse Centre (www.dmu.ac.uk/mdc), De Montfort University, UK. He is also Visiting Professor at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, working within the field of Media and International Relations. He is the author of a number of monographs and textbooks (including Worst-Case Scenario?, 2011) and Communication Studies (1996). With Ruth Sanz-Sabido, he edited two books on Protest, and has recently brought out the edited volume Journalism, Power and Investigation (2019).
