The Jewish congregation of Bridgetown, Barbados, was formally established in 1654. However, Portuguese Jews and conversos from Brazil, Surinam, London and other places had been arriving in Barbados since the beginning of the British colonisation of the island in 1627. The Nidhe Israel (“The Dispersed Ones of Israel”) synagogue was the home of this community for centuries. In 1831, a massive hurricane ruined the island and deeply affected the Jewish community. The Jewish population declined to only 70 Jews by 1848. The economic recession dealt the final blow. By 1925, there were no Jews in Barbados. After World War II, the island hosted several Jewish refugees, and the community was gradually restored. The current Nidhe Israel synagogue was dedicated in 1987 and stands in a different location from the original one. Also, in 1987, the Old Jewish cemetery in Bridgetown underwent restoration works. The numerous tombstones with Portuguese and Spanish inscriptions stand as a living testimony of the Iberian background of the early members of this community.

A congregação judaica de Bridgetown foi formalmente estabelecida em 1654. Porém, desde o início da colonização britânica em 1627 que judeus portugueses e conversos vindos do Brasil, Suriname, Londres e outros locais se fixaram em Barbados. A sinagoga Nidhe Israel (“os dispersos de Israel”) foi o lar da comunidade durante séculos. Em 1831, um furacão devastou a ilha, afectando profundamente o destino da comunidade judaica. O número de judeus a viver em Barbados por volta de 1848 decaíra para cerca de 70 indivíduos. A recessão económica desferiu o golpe final e, em 1925, a população judaica já havia desaparecido. Após a II Guerra Mundial, a ilha acolheu vários refugiados judeus e, ao longo dos anos, a comunidade renasceu. A actual sinagoga Nidhe Israel foi inaugurada em 1987 numa localização diferente do templo original. Também em 1987, o antigo cemitério judaico de Bridgetown beneficiou de obras de restauro.
